Barnes And Noble's Recent Nook Wireless Ebook Reader Confronts Amazon.Com's EBook Reader Device
The recent Nook wireless book reader being sold by Barnes and Noble, the worlds largest book store with more than 1,300 branches, looks set to lock horns with the worlds best selling portable reading device, the Kindle.
Though not long released, the Nook electronic book readers are looking to ruffle Amazon.com's feathers further by taking it on directly in a sector of the marketplace, that up to yet, the Kindle has dominated. Since it's launch, firstly as the Kindle then later on in February 2009 as the Kindle2 , it has re-ignited the digital book reader market by offering a mix up of innovative technology, through it's instant connect anywhere wireless broadband and also the biggest selection of titles available for download at superb, cheaper than the high street, price point.
No doubt after going through ebook reader reviews, customers brought in to the concept in a big way and it is only lately that the rest of the industry have woken up to the fact that this is the future of book retail. An so in the most recent couple of months we have had the announcement from Sony of their intention to join in the fun, with their shortly to be released Daily Edition, and the latest press release from Barnes and Noble that their own competitor, the Nook, will return to full production very soon.
There are no doubts that the Kindle is the device everyone is going for. And to be frank it's pleasing to see a little competition in this sector. Yes we have had the iRex iLiad but the ebook readers reviews disliked it because it was a little on the bulky side to be a wireless book reader, perfect for office use with the 1:1 A4 imitation, but much like the Amazon dx - another wireless ebook reader - not something you would want to take on vacation, or put in your purse or pocket for that matter, and it was by no means going to compete on price was it?
Accordingly now we have 2 large companies willing to go head to head, with the might of Amazon, on all fronts. The book reader arm of sony recently increased the size of their collection at the Sony-Store and discounted the prices of their digitally delivered titles to match that of Amazons and with a bit of luck B&N, who have always been in the same ballpark affordability wise, will equal them title for title as well.
But the biggest news for customers has to be the move away from proprietary file formats used by Sony in the initial days and in spite of everything used by the Kindle now. To explain the situation I will make use of Amazon as an example, remember this is even now the situation with the Kindle so it makes it clearer.
